Assigning Intonational Features in Synthesized Spoken Directions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Speakers convey much of the information hearers use to interpret discourse by varying prosodic features such as phrasing, pitch accent placement, tune, and pitch range. The ability to emulate such variation is crucial to e ective (synthetic) speech generation. While text-tospeech synthesis must rely primarily upon structural information to determine appropriate intonational features, speech synthesized from an abstract representation of the message to be conveyed may employ much richer sources. The implementation of an intonation assignment component for Direction Assistance, a program which generates spoken directions, provides a rst approximation of how recent models of discourse structure can be used to control intonational variation in ways that build upon recent research in intonational meaning. The implementation further suggests ways in which these discourse models might be augmented to permit the assignment of appropriate intonational features.

Using Machine Learning to Identify Intonational Segments
The intonational phrase is hypothesized to represent a meaningful unit of analysis in spoken language interpretation. We present results on the identification of intonational phrase boundaries from acoustic features using classification and regression trees (CART). Our training and test data are taken from the Boston Directions Corpus (task-oriented monologue) and the HUB-IV Broadcast News data...
متن کاملDiscovering the Sounds of Discourse Structure Extended Abstract
It is widely accepted that discourses are composed of segments and that the recognition of segment boundaries is essential to a determination of discourse meaning (Grosz and Sidner, 1986). Written language has orthographic cues such as section headings, paragraph boundaries, and punctuation which can assist in identifying discourse structure. In spoken language, into-national variation provides...
متن کاملThe Pragmatics of Intonational Meaning
Starting from Carlos Gussenhoven’s proposal Gussenhoven02 that intonational meaning be understood in terms of three biological codes, this paper suggests an augmentation of that proposal to connect human experience of these biological phenomena to the process of spoken communication. Under this scenario, the codes give rise to a set of Conversational Implicatures, similar to those defined by H....
متن کاملAutomatic Prosody Labeling Final Project Report for EE 6820 - Spring 05 Professor : Dan
Automatic transcription of prosody is necessary for spoken language understanding. Prominence and intonational boundaries are routinely used to convey meaning beyond that expressed in the lexical content of speech. Using a classiÞcation rule learning algorithm and computationally light acoustic and syntactic features, detection of pitch accent at 87% on spontaneous elicited speech were attained...
متن کاملModeling pitch errors of Japanese intonational phrases spoken by a native speaker of Chinese
We compared pitch patterns of Japanese intonational phrases spoken by a native speaker of Chinese. Several types of pitch errors were distinguished according to pitch contour shapes within and across intonational phrases. These shapes differ categorically from one another—for instance, the learner uses flat contours while the native uses hump-like contours. Comparisons of the learner and native...
